Update from the Chairman

GLHamCon Update – 9/19/17

The first Great Lakes Amateur Radio Convention – GLHamCon, is only days away. We are excited about this new tradition and want to provide this update.

We were honored to be designated by the ARRL as the location for the 2017 ARRL Great Lakes Division Convention and look forward to welcoming ARRL President Rick Roderick K5UR as our keynote speaker. The League will have a robust presence with representation from Newington along with Great Lakes Division Director Dale Williams WA8EFK and Section Managers from the division in attendance.

The GLHamCon banquet, featuring President Roderick, will be held Saturday evening in the Champion’s Club, high atop the Grandstands.

We are pleased to welcome friends from both the Dayton Hamvention and the Orlando Hamcation and Youth activities legend Carole Perry WB2MGP. A full slate of informative forums are on tap covering many dimensions of amateur radio, from contesting and propagation to, kit building and DX. 22 clubs from within the division are founding co-sponsors.

K8MIS will be active as the GLHamCon special event station under the direction of the South Lyon Area Amateur Radio Club and talk in services will be available via the Brooklyn 145.12 repeater (123 Hz tone). A Wouff Hong ceremony and KB6NU’s Technician in a day licensing class will also be held, followed by VE testing by the Ford Amateur Radio League.

Michigan International Speedway has been a terrific partner, providing first rate camping facilities and a breathtaking festival venue.

Commerce attractions include an extensive flea market along pit road, along with a half dozen vendors. The timing of the event with its proximity to a couple of other significant hamfests have limited vendor participation in year one. As with most traditions, we expect GLHamCon to grow in both size and scope with each passing year.

We look forward to welcoming you to the inaugural Great Lakes Ham Con. Ticket sales are projected to top 1,000 attendees. See you soon at HamCon. “It’s gonna be great.”
